Unfortinatly, I'm having trouble with getting it running. I installed your binary package today. No matter what I do, I keep getting the error "Couldn't open RGB_DB '/usr/lib/X11/rgb'" followed by a "Fatal Server error", "Couldn't add screen". rgb.txt is in /usr/lib/X11/ (and I've tried it in numerous other places with the -co flag to Xvnc). The rgb.txt is identical to the one on my Linux machine, so it's valid. Was wondering if anyone else had this problem. Is it possible to display windows programs which reside on a MS-Terminal
Server on X-Terminals when Cygwin-xfree is installed on that MS-Terminal
server?
Or is Cygwin-xfree only intended to display X programs which are ported to
windows with cygwin?

Subject: Help: missing export CYGWIN1.DLL:_ctype_?
Message-ID:

Hi!

I'm a two day old new user of Cygwin32 V20.1 on my W98 machine.
I installed a "full" version with X11R6.4 (with a pre-alpha XGGI server) and
"/usr/local" distribution as well as "coolview". I read FAQ and some other
documents regarding the installation, so I think I have a right setup (of
course I may be wrong).

I don't have any problem with basic things like console apps, but when I try
to start X server with "./XGGI -targets directx &", I get a strange error
like this;

"The XGGI.EXE file is linked to missing export CYGWIN1.DLL:_ctype_".

I can't start X client using "startx" with a similar error;

"The LIBX11.DLL file is linked to missing export CYGWIN1.DLL:_mb_cur_max_".

I believe I'm doing something wrong, and can't find any related message in
the mail archive.

Any suggestion/correction will be greatly appreciated.

The later is True. But you should be able to display to Unix, X apps ported
to Windows
and installed on Windows, using the XGDI/XVNC server.

While you can start Xvnc/Xggi on a MS-Terminal Server (either NT 4.0 TSE
or Win2000 Server), you still face the same problem: port binding. There
can only be one "Xvnc :0" (bound to port 6000), one "Xvnc :1" (bound to
port 6001), etc. To remedy this, you must either assign a display per
NT user (or Anon00x user) and limit them to one session, or you must
find a way to dynamically trigger an Xserver that uniquely assigns a port
per session. Likewise, with the lack of a functional xauth, you might
also want to carefully consider running Xvnc/Xggi as "-ac" out of
security concerns.

However, It should be possible to run a split Xserver model with
Xvncviewer on a TSE machine triggering an inetd initiated native Xvnc
server port on your host box. This would have the benefit of being
completely OpenSource, but does have the overhead of the somewhat
slower overhead of RFB.

If you're looking for a commercial equivalent, check out the Graphon
GoBetween<>GoGlobal model. You run GoBetween on your TSE server
farming out to your PCs - which in turn connect via Graphon
proprietary "RapidX" (instead of RFB), to GoGlobal - the actual
Xserver running virtually on your X11 host box. Visit:
	http://www.graphon.com

Another alternative would be Citrix' Metaframe for Unix native ICA
environment. As it is rather new, you will probably want to talk to
a Citrix representative directly. Generally, however, Metaframe isn't
a cheap option.
	http://www.citrix.com

The third commercial alternative might be SCO Tarantella:
	http://tarantella.sco.com

Any Xserver needs to bind to the listening port related to its screen.
By moving the Xserver off to your Unix host and using a thin-client
model to move the display across the wire, you can initiate sessions
dynamicall - keep X11 traffic local to the server in question -
minimize LAN traffic - and do some rather interesting things with
split network topologies without the needs for an overly complex
proxy.

An OpenSource alternative would be ideal, but GraphOn's model is far
better than the messy full-Xserver option.

Hope this helps.

PS. Xvnc/Xggi XDMCP support really would make my day... Beer anyone? :)

Apparently, your application was built on a more recent version of cygwin
than B20.1. Try to find out what the corresponding installation or upgrade
instructions are. It looks as if it were build for a snapshot ( patch files
available on ftp://egcs.cygnus.com ) not much over a year old.

I've been quite impressed with the XVNC server in the day or so I've spent
looking at it. This morning's task was to get the XGGI server running (all
of this under WinNT4). After fighting with a few things mentioned earlier
on the list, I got the window displayed, and have clients connecting to it
(from a neighbourhood Linux machine).

However, the Server is not accepting mouse or keyboard input. In fact, the
mouse pointer disappears while over the window.

Any thoughts? I'm not much of a C coder (and I'm also aware that NT hasn't
been specifically targetted by the XServer), but I'm willing to try
suggestions and offer some feedback.

This is all amazing stuff.

As I recall there is an Input bug in GII libs.

Try moving Xserver Window on the screen. It may help. John may answer a
better fix for it.

The mouse pointer is 'mostly' supposed to disappear when over the x-window
screen. Try clicking on the screen, even if you can't see the mouse pointer.
The x-window cursor should appear. You might also try moving the cursor to the
botton-right of the screen to re-sync it.

I have to track down this bug. I haven't had time yet.

I have the default 'X' mouse cursor on the window from the time it starts.

Tried that with no effect. The X cursor remains stubbornly in the centre
of the window.

Did try that, too, with no success.

Try setting GGI_DEBUG env
in a bash shell type
export GGI_DEBUG=255
then cd to the directory you have insatlled XGGI executable. and type

./xggi -target directx &

post the output. I want to see if you are having problems to laod GGI and GII libs.

By the way did you edit the ggi configuration file as described in the anouncement

Seemed somewhat anti-climactic as it didn't change from when GGI_DEBUG=0:

I have fixed the Fonts problems. I wanted to release a new DirectX based X server from Karra's. I have hit some bumps with DirectX code,
which is holding the next release.

SecurityPolicy is a warning and should not affect your Xserver display.

If GGI_DEBUG is not showing anything, that means your GGI libs are getting loaded. Are they in PATH?

Okay, /usr/local/lib was in the path. When removed, it can no longer find
libgg-0-0-6.dll which is as expected. When added, but the libggi.conf file
altered to point at a different path, it can no longer find the visual for
directx (also expected). When corrected, the window (with no input)
appears.

Still no additional output. And for confirmation "echo $GGI_DEBUG"
displays "255".

Don't you have to make a copy of libgg-0-0-6.dll to libgg-0-0-7.dll
 and same for libgii?
It is in FAQ on Cygwin-xfree URL? If I am not mistaken.

It clearly seems to me that input libs (libgii and libgg) are not getting loaded.

I made the copies as noted in the post (libgg and libgii to 0-0-6, still in
/usr/local/lib)

> It clearly seems to me that input libs (libgii and libgg) are not getting loaded.

When /usr/local/lib is not in the path, I receive a message that it cannot
load libgg-0-0-6.dll. This is as I expected. When the directory is in the
path, the app loads and the window appears, with no notification that there
is a missing dll -- thus I assume it _is_ being loaded. But still no debug
messages. (or mouse/keyboard input)

To be sure and to make sure no one was left out I tried this. With no
additional success:

$export GGI_DEBUG=255
$export GGI_DEFMODE=800x600[GT_16BIT]
$export GGI_CONFDIR=/usr/local/etc/ggi
$export PATH=/usr/local/lib:/usr/local/lib/ggi/display:/usr/local/lib/default:/usr/local/lib/input:/usr/local/lib/filter:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin
$XGGI -targets directx
PEXExtensionInit: Couldn't open default PEX font file Roman_Merror opening security policy file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xserver/SecurityPolicy
$

(the last prompt after I closed the window)

(I don't think I'm missing anything.)

ls /usr/local/lib

I forwarded John's message. Maybe that will help.

BTW. Another X-server, though not very stable, based upon Karra's DirectX framebuffer X-server source code and XFree86 3.9,18 will be released within next couple of
days. i will combine XGGI, and the new X-server binaries into a single binary distribution tar-ball. The new distribution will have fonts problems fixed.

Subject: XWin server Alpha version!!!
Message-ID:

I have uploaded the binaries of XWin server. The bzip2 archive also
contains X11R6 libs and headers. This version has Shared memory (XShm)
enabled. The Xwin.exe (executable for Xserver for Win32) is drived
from DirectX source code contributed by D. Karra and XFree86 3.9.18 public
snapshots.
It is an alpha version and of course it is not bugs free.

X server runs in fullscreen mood only, at the moment.

ftp://sourceware.cygnus.com/pub/cygwin/xfree/pre-alpha-xfree-cygwin-b20.1.ta
r.bz2

Please note: It is an alpha version and intended for developers
particapting in
this project. Not recommended for production use.

The patched X source code for Cygwin/GCC-2.95.2 is also available.
To compile the code you need the following stuff:

1) Cygwin v 1.0 CD Release (or a latest Cgwin Snapshot. B20.1 stock is not
recommended. Cygwin v 1.0
offers improved performance and stability.
2) X3.9.18-1.tar.bz2
3) X3.9.18-2.tar.bz2
4) X3.9.18-3.tar.bz2

5) libcrypt for Cygwin from ftp://sourceware.cygnus.com/pub/cygwin/xfree
libcrypt is needed to compile xdm. Install it in
\cygnus\cygin-b20\H-i586-cygwin32\i586-cygwin32

6) IPC for Cygwin from http://cygutils.netpedia.net/v1.1/ . Install it in
\cygnus\cygin-b20\H-i586-cygwin32\i586-cygwin32. Rename libcygipc.a to
libipc.a; in include/sys rename ipc.h to cygipc.h.

7) DirectX for Cygwin (John Fortin's port)
http://pws.prserv.net/thefortins/cyg-directx.html
Install directX in \cygnus\cygin-b20\H-i586-cygwin32\i586-cygwin32.

8) GCC-2.95.2 for Cygwin from Mumit Khan's ftp server;
ftp://ftp.xraylith.wisc.edu/pub/khan/gnu-win32/cygwin/gcc-2.95.2

TO DO stuff:
1) Fix known bugs. There maybe plenty of them right now.
2) Integrate X-server into Win32 Desktop, so Win32 and X can share
the same desktop.

Contributors are needed for the "TO DO stuff".

The SGI OpenGL DDK port to Cygwin has already been done. It is
at my personal URL at http://siddiqi.webjump.com . It is based upon
the recent SGI OpenGL Implementation Source Code Release under
SGI OpenSource Project. It includes static as well as DLLs of
libGL, libGLU, libGlw, libnurbs and libRGB. The port was straight
forward except at a few places you need to fix #ifdef WIN32
which caused conflicts with Win32 API headers in Cygwin.
Follow the instructions for compliation under Linux, and merge the
SGI OpenGL Implementation code to Cygwin/XFree code base
per Linux for Linux. Then make World would compile
the SGI OpenGL beast.

Any recent Cygwin Snapshot should do. I am currently using
cygwin-inst-20000221.tar.gz

After extraction I rename the i686-pc-cygwin to i586-cygwin32 and copy
everything to H-i586-cygwin32. This is a crude way of installing
a snapshot to replace your stock B20.1.

Great! Do you have patches for this stuff for the changes? I am
currently running with the latest CVS versions of the SGI OpenGL
stuff rather than one of the tarball distributions. I want to merge
this into our perforce server so we can track the latest updates to
the code.

Thanks! I will give that a try.

BTW, I assume I don't need any of the other snapshot files then?

I did not make patches. But I did backup the X and OpenGL merged source
tree
on a CD. When I get time I will post the patch. This is what I did.

1) Merge SGI OpenGL CVS based code, as of Febr 14th, to XF86 3.91x source
tree
per instructions for Linux.

2) make World compiled X and OpenGL.

3) Only one source file in GLU failed to compile. It was because it had at
ONLY
place #ifdef WIN32, I changed it to #if defined(WIN32) &&
!defined(__CYGWIN__).

No you do not. Always use complete cygwin-inst-xxxxx snapshots, not just
the
DLLs when compiling X. I would recommend using cygwin-inst-20000227.tar.gz
which has CPU overhead fixes. I tested it last night and had a very good
success with it, when compiling X.
