Chad,
	The answer to your second question will also answer your first 
one.  The 8 refers to a screen number. This should actually be set to 0 
instead of 8 for the command line arguments to have an effect on the 
Xserver you start on a single headed machine. I believe the default is 
8 bit if you do not specify the properties for screen 0 and that is why 
you are having problems.
