xfree86 runs but programs can't connect to it

I haven't found a great solution. Shu Shimizu compiled an libx11.dll that is a real hack that seems to partly fix it (see his previous message). Both Shu and I are running a VPN client, and that may have something to do with it (see posts on the cygwin mailing list).
