I can't either. Several builders of xfree86 have reported problems with
SAMBA however. The two things that I think worth looking at are:
symlinks
Imake.

As you had already address'd symlinks, I thought it worthwhile to bring
up the Imake potential issue - in case you had been building with Imake
we could narrow the issues down to just symlinks.
