more startup "stalling"

I hacked around some in startwin and then saw "can't connect to display
127.0.0.1" coming from the clients and then I realised it was my own stupid
fault - my socks proxy was configured to send 127.0.0.1 out to the real
world ... sigh.

I've got a nice XTerm up now so I think I'm ok...
