Oddvard,

I'm going to guess that you did not use Cygwin's tar to extract the
tarballs, right?

You *have* to use Cygwin's tar to extract the archives, as described in the
User's Guide, as Winzip et al will mess up the end of line characters on the
extracted files.

Reinstall Cygwin/XFree86 as per the User's Guide instructions; a link to the
User's Guide is on the Cygwin/XFree86 home page.
