Xfree hangs with Solaris 8

I am trying to convert from using Exceed to XFree86 4.1.0 on Windows NT 4.0
SP6A. After a spot of bother we configured a font server on Solaris and now
the login/chooser window is available. I can login to OpenWindows an
everything works very nicely but when I login with CDE just as the login is
completing the mouse pointer freezes and the application hangs and needs to
be shut down with task manager.

I have now run out of ideas and need some inspiration,
