Dear Suhaib,

Many thanks for your help.  I added the extra line to my config.sys
file, as you suggested, and lo and behold, xfree86 now runs fine.

Also, thanks for the pointer to Fabio Somenzi's script.

p.s. I really appreciate the efforts of the cygwin/xfree86
developers.  It's really great to have x with cygwin.  :)
