If you have XWin.exe in the /usr/x11R6/bin directory then it should be
installed. Im not sure what doesn't exist when you say:
"and X is a soft link to XWin (which doesn't exist)"
If you go to the /usr/X11R6/bin directory and type "./XWin.exe" what
happens?
