keyboard problem starting XFree86

I installed cygwin/xfree86 on windows 2000 to have a x-server (with the
default selection of packages and the packages from xfree/binaries/4.2.0)
The cygwin environment runs fine but the x-environment (using startx) has an
american keyboard (I use a french keyboard).
Could you tell me how to get my keyboard to work fine under the
x-environment.
