startxwin.bat - errors after that

Just a shot in the dark here.  Do a search on your system for the file 
"cygwin1.dll".  Make sure there is only one, and that it's in the cygwin 
tree (c:\cygwin\usr\bin\cygwin1.dll by default).

Running "man startx" from a bash prompt tells you everything you could ever 
want to know about startx.  In short, to pass parameters to the XServer, use 
this syntax "startx -- -serverparm".  For example:

  startx -- -rootless

tells startx to tell XWin to start in rootless mode.
