startx timing out

A few suggestions:
1) If you have a file in your home directory called .Xauthority, delete it
(or at least rename it if you want to use it again later).
2) If you don't have a file in your home directory called .xinitrc, create
one containing something like the following (the following does the same
stuff as the stock startxwin.sh and startxwin.bat):
xsetroot -solid aquamarine4
xterm -sl 1000 -sb -rightbar -ms red -fg yellow -bg black \
-e /usr/bin/bash &
twm
