Xt error:can't open display;ssh not passing $DISPLAY

The sshd server at the remote end also has to be configured to allow X 
forwarding.  It's possible that could be to blame.  There's a switch to 
(dis)allow it in /etc/ssh/sshd_config

By the way, if you are on system "local" and run "ssh -X remote", then the 
correct value of DISPLAY in the resulting terminal should NOT be local:0 or 
something similar. it should look like remote:10 or simply :10.
