Hmm, haven't seen GTK on cygwin, but there exists a Win32-version of
GTK, maybe gimp can be used that way?

Which programs? The Cygwin XFree ones? Through cygwins setup-program,
findable at http://www.cygwin.com/

Yep you can.. drag it (the startxwin.bat) into your startup..
