can not start 'startx' from the prompt and missing files

Well... strange thing is that startxwin.sh does work on the prompt.  The 
'automatic' installation has been very problematic for me in that I had to 
manually tweak .profile or .bashrc files to create a home directory and 
stuff.  And the fact that I am having trouble with 'startx' did not give me 
a whole lot of confidence. Hence my question about it.  I can probably live 
with this but not for long.
