Using Multiple X Windows

I have tried this and when I type xterm at the prompt after doing "Xwin
-multiwindow" I get an "xterm Xt error: Can'topen disply:"

Does this have something to do with the DISPLAY variable which I have read
the FAQ and User Guide and it tells me know where how to set that variable.

No, the root window is still shown because multiwindow mode is not yet
complete. It may take quite an amount of work to hide the root window,
or it may be trivial. I have not really looked into it.
