XWin on Windows 98 unreliable

These are some of the things I have heard people complain about:

the entry
127.0.0.1 localhost
 is not in /etc/hosts file

Are you configured to use a proxy server? (AOL ?)

Do you have multiple network interfaces enabled?

Do you  have a network drive mapped to your computer?

Are you using Trumpet Winsock?

If you are using any personal firewall, disabling it is not sufficient, 
it must be removed,
as it modifies the IP stack.

Hope one of these works.
