emacs crash under X on XP

Have you tried updating to 1.5.8-1 or a snapshot?

I was having crashes in 1.5.7-1 that went away when I upgraded to a pre-1.5.8 snapshot.

The mailing list archives may also be helpful as I recall others having emacs problems that went away with pre-1.5.8 snapshots.
