Frequent 'hang' running Cygwin/X with remote apps under Win98SE

Using the most recent Cygwin installation, running under Windows 98
Second Edition, I get frequent 'hangs'/freezes when running remote X
applications across SSH (via PuTTY).

This happens repeatedly and reproducibly under Windows 98 SE but not at
all under Windows XP.

I realise that this description is incredibly vague for which I
apologise. I feel I should be able to troubleshoot this myself,
however, my question is: where should I look for more diagnostic
information? Is there a way to increase the verbosity of this
diagnostic information?

Thanks,

Dave.
