Message-ID: <4570F58C.8020409@pittstate.edu> Please forgive me if I'm not posting this to the correct list... I've just done a fresh install of Windows Vista Business Enterprise. For some reason, I cannot get the cygwin X server to start. When I run either of the batch files in the subject, I get a popup message from the OS saying that "sh.exe has stopped working". To clean up from this error, I have to go into task manager and kill the following processes: two instances of Xwin.exe sh.exe xterm.exe (if running startxwin) I've also noticed that if I do a netstat -anb, Xwin.exe is listening on port 6000. When I installed, I did a full installation and have already tried running a rebaseall, but to no avail. My RUN statement is just the default: %RUN% XWin -multiwindow -clipboard -silent-dup-error Since I have 2 monitors attached to my desktop, I originally started with the -multiplemonitors argument, but removed it during troubleshooting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is my /tmp/XWin.log _XSERVTransmkdir: ERROR: euid != 0,directory /tmp/.X11-unix will not be created. How would I go about doing that? Either try the latest developer snapshot or build a new version from source. I did the latter with additional debug output. The problem still doesn't show up anymore, regardless of the version I use. You could also try stuff like rebasing to another base address, e.g. rebaseall -b 0x65000000, rebase back to 0x70000000, reboot, revert to the 1.5.22 DLL, whatever. Tom, Contrary to the popular belief and the unfortunate naming, the X server is not really a server. It is an application that accepts requests from other applications (called the X clients) and draws them on the screen. This means that it needs to have access to the Windows desktop (which is one of the reasons it cannot successfully run as a service). You are probably better off with your current setup. Uh? And it just happens to be based on Xorg-X11 (previuosly XFree86). > It is an application that accepts requests from > other applications (called the X clients) and draws them on the screen. And the window manager is usually the X client sending requests. The user application goes to the middleman (window manager), which in Cygwin X is part of the server (but another window manager can be used optionally, like WindowMaker for instance). > This means that it needs to have access to the Windows desktop (which is > one of the reasons it cannot successfully run as a service). And the -i parameter of cygrunsrv wouldn't help because... > You are probably better off with your current setup. It is probably not easy to do what the OP asked, and I haven't even tried but I think it is possible. First you have to know what you really want: running X as service will not magically produce a login window if you try to connect from another machine, and setting up gnome-session/xsm/ksmserver is probably not easy. But that is not a good objective anyway, if you wanted something like that you use any Unix OS. But, for an already logged in user, I think it just works (meaning a running X server will allow to open X applications). I do something similar, not a service that starts on boot, but a background X server that is running without the usual xterm that you can't close (the next step would be to test cygrunsrv with, and w/o, the -i option). -- Ren? Jeff, I do not have windows Netmeeting running. I do have VNC Server running. Would that make a difference? I think what I am looking for is either the behavior - you get when the virtual desktop is larger then the screen size; the screen is a scrolling window over the desktop - some way to dynamically resize windows, like MS does for its windows. The most likely explanation is that you have Cygwin mounted in text mode on your machine, but binary mode on the other machine. A separate mount of the X11 font directories should be unnecessary if you are using binary mode anyway. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From qazwart@gmail.com Wed Dec 6 14:55:00 2006 From: qazwart@gmail.com (David Weintraub) Date: Wed, 06 Dec 2006 14:55:00 -0000 Subject: -silent-dup-error command line parameter not working? Message-ID: I've been using Cygwin/X for several years, and I never had this problem before. However, I've recently installed Cygwin/X on my new system, and now I notice that XWin's -silent-dup-error command line parameter no longer seems to work. I startup Cygwin/X by creating a Windows shortcut that runs startxwin.bat. This will startup a XTerm window for me. When I want to start another XTerm window, I simply the same shortcut again even though XWin is already running. I depend upon the -silent-dup-error parameter to allow the second instance of XWin to fail without alerting me of the problem. However, on this new installation of Cygwin/X and run XWin with -silent-dup-error, I now get the error dialog box. The new Xterm still starts, but now I have to manually close the dialog box which is a minor pain. Has there been a change in XWin in the last 18 months that would cause this problem? Is there a workaround? How can I, in a Windows batch program, determine whether XWin is already running, so I can simply skip bypass rerunning the XWin command? -- David Weintraub qazwart@gmail.com -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From Randy.Brown@noaa.gov Wed Dec 6 14:59:00 2006 From: Randy.Brown@noaa.gov (Randy Brown) Date: Wed, 06 Dec 2006 14:59:00 -0000 Subject: -silent-dup-error command line parameter not working? I'm really hoping someone can help me out. I used cygwin for years on XP and now that I've moved to Vista, I can't get anything to work. Whenever I try to run /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.bat , it crashes. I have created a stackdump and put it here: https://go.pittstate.edu/mjw/cygwin.strace . I was told to rebaseall and that didn't work. I also tried rebasing to a different address, then back to the default -- still nothing. Next, I was told to try to rebuild the current cygwin package. That fails on make install every time (collect2.exe). After that, I tried building the latest snapshot... Now configure fails near the beginning when it's testing to see if gcc works. The only way I've seen to get around that is to do a full reinstall.. but that's kind of frustrating waiting for 2 hours to reinstall everything. Basically I'm at my wits end and I really hope somebody can help before I give up on being able to use cygwin on Vista... -- Michael J. The service runs continually in the background and listens for connections. The procedure is relatively simple: Create an environment variable: CYGWIN = server From a cygwin terminal window run: /usr/bin/cygserver-config (Answer "yes" to the prompt and reboot) Then you can add Startxwin.bat, for example, to your startup folder so The Xserver starts at boot. I'm new to Cygwin/X, and I'm trying to use it to run Micros 8700 apps (on a SCO OpenServer 5 machine) from my Win2K PC. I'm running an out-of-the box default install of Cygwin/X, except for adding the -ac switch to the startxdmcp.bat file (thanks to Matt Flemming's web site). I can successfully run startxdmcp.bat and log in to the OpenServer desktop. All the built-in OpenServer apps seem to work, and all the Micros 8700 apps work except one (Configurator), which of course is the one I need. When I attempt to start the app, the outline of the window begins to display, but before the contents become visible it immediately closes. The XWin.log file looks exactly the same whether I run a working app or the nonworking one, so that doesn't seem to give me any clues. I don't know where to go from here to troubleshoot - any suggestions would be appreciated. For anyone out there that might be unsure, the procedure described above does *not* start Cygwin's X-server as a service. It starts Cygwin's 'cygserver' as a service. This service is not required to run the X-server. The Cygwin X-server is started just as one would manually but automates it by putting it in the startup folder. Things started from this folder are not services, though it is a perfectly good way to start the X-server automatically. For those that don't care about the distinction or the details, please forget what I just said. ;-) -- Larry Hall http://www.rfk.com RFK Partners, Inc. (508) 893-9779 - RFK Office 216 Dalton Rd. I recently started to use Fluxbox as my WM in Cygwin/X but I'd like to do to things and I didn't find how so far: 1- I start Fluxbox using xinit, where my ~./xinitrc file has contains "exec startfluxbox" at the end of the script. This way the xserver starts fullscreen with Fluxbox as my WM. What I would like to do here is to remove all borders around the root window (i.e. the fullscreen window), along with the window title in the top border. Does anybody know how I can do this? 2- What I would like better is to have fluxbox started with no root window. So far, I got to do this by startiung Fluxbox with the startx command, in which I chnged the line "defaultserverargs="-multiwindow -clipboard" for "defaultserverargs="-rootless". There are 2 things I don't like about this way: 1) I need to start Fluxbox manually from an xterm once the Cygwin/X environment has started, and 2) I don't have access to the Fluxbox contextual menus that are usually accessed through the mouse right button. I would appreciate any suggestions that will make my use of Cygwin/X and Fluxbox more pleasant. Technically it attaches a dll that uses the same memory space as the Cygwin.dll. >From a practical standpoint, just getting rid of the QuickCam software allows your applications to work. But there is an alternative, Logitech published a revised version that doesn't causes the problem. BTW I don't use any of the problematic packages mentioned, this is just information that comes up on this list and on the main Cygwin list over and over... it is getting annoying, so many problem reports about the same thing. -- Ren? Thanks. See > Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Can you run the application successfully if you use ssh and X tunneling? I've actually never even tried to get Cygwin to function as a regular old X server. I have always tunneled it through ssh and have never had issues. You'd have to start X up with just startx and then use ssh with at least -X and possibly -Y. Have you tried disabling any local firewalls or anti-virus protection on your Windows system? Message-ID: <457DEBA3.2030301@pittstate.edu> Hello, I'm trying out the latest snapshot and I'm still seeing some issues that I have seen in the previous versions. I'm very happy to report that xterm at least launches for me under the 2006-DEC-11 snapshot. But whenever I attempt to interact with the system tray icon, one of my CPUs spikes to 100% and stays there. Anybody else seeing this issue? -- Michael J. Makes the Windows XP part of the gvims disappears (see attached problem.bmp.bz2). Minimizing the terminal will make them come back. Schulz) Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2006 15:39:00 -0000 Subject: XDMCP phenomenon Message-ID: Hi Folks, I am using Cygwin for more than a year now to log into several machines via XDMCP. No I am transferring my admin workstation. And with cygwin on the new machine there is a problem I did not have before: - using "X -broadcast" gives me the login screen of one of my servers, and I can work with it as usual. - using "X -query HOSTNAME" in all variants I know leads to a blank grey screen with no login of my servers, even if I substitute HOSTNAME with the one that always wins the race at "X -broadcast". So all of the normal cures against the "no login" problem (like allowing XDMCP on the server you want to log into) are of no use - all thas has been solved a year before when I started using Cygwin. I have looked into netstat on the cygwin box. After the "X -query ..." there is a connection on port 6000. Now googling for this phenomenon brought nothing enlightening, googling for "XDMCP no login cygwin" only leads to 2 million variants of "enable XDMCP on your server". I am quite stuck. Any hint or help is appreciated. Any clues? Not really, but i can confirm that behaviour. I'm using XWin -query to get an XDMCP session, and neither a logoff nor a windows close work. I get 100% cpu load and have to kill it. After I installed this software when I try to run the program by executing (double clicking the icon) cygwin.bat instead of cygwin this newly installed program phpEdit starts to run. It sounds some form of hijacking cygwin takes place. 2) As an intervention even after I uninstalled phpedit cygwin still fails to run. What happens is instead the famous Windows dialogue box pop ups asking which program to use to open cygwin.bat file defaulting to notepad as the best program to open it-remember my intention is to run not to see content of file. 3) As a second intervention, I unistalled the old cygwin and downloaded a fresh setup.exe file and also downloaded and performed a new install even from different mirrors. But the problem still persist. Again and again it ask me to choose a program to open the "cygwin.bat" file despite the fact that what I want is to run not to open. When I use note pad and open the content I only get a text file of "cygwin.bat" with the following content: @echo off C: chdir C:\cygwin\bin bash --login -i How can I make cygwin run? Why particularly this problem is manifested after I installed phpEdit? When cygwin supposed to run when cygwin.bat executed why phpEdit instead run? [after writing this lengthy report, i thought i'd try out the latest snapshot dll and the problems all completely disappear. i cannot produce zombies using cygwin1-20061218.dll.bz2] the problems all seem to manifest through starting apps under X, hence i'm cross posting this to cygwin-xfree. in this environment, i can quite easily produce windows zombies (i.e. show under windows task manager, but not under cygwin ps) almost any x app: gnuplot, rxvtc-X, emacs, xset, wmbgset. but it isn't consistent, it's quite random in happening. for instance, i just ran multiple times "xset q" and on the 6th attempt, it hung (all the output is there, it just doesn't come back to the console, and from another shell, i see the xset process has no parent process id), where i now have to kill the windows process at which point, my prompt then reappears. i've minimized my .xinitrc to only start up urxvtd, and a single client with "LC_CTYPE=en_UK.UTF-8 urxvtc -e /bin/bash --login" and no window manager, or any other application running. if i do ps -ef i get: UID PID PPID TTY STIME COMMAND markf 20676 1 con 14:03:54 /usr/bin/rxvt markf 20768 20676 2 14:03:54 /usr/bin/bash markf 19064 1 con 14:06:56 /usr/bin/rxvt markf 19376 19064 0 14:06:56 /usr/bin/bash markf 22096 1 0 14:08:40 /usr/X11R6/bin/xinit markf 20648 22096 0 14:08:40 /usr/X11R6/bin/XWin markf 18448 22096 0 14:08:42 /usr/bin/bash markf 17380 18448 0 14:08:42 /usr/bin/urxvtd-X markf 21916 17380 1 14:08:43 /usr/bin/bash markf 22268 21916 1 14:10:40 /usr/bin/ps but there is a zombie process you can see under ps -W: PID PPID PGID WINPID TTY UID STIME COMMAND 20304 0 0 20304 ? 0 14:08:43 C:\cygwin\bin\urxvtc-X.exe also, after creating zombies through emacs/gnuplot, i also see: 20712 0 0 20712 ? 0 14:15:34 C:\cygwin\bin\emacs.exe 22340 0 0 22340 ? 0 14:01:52 C:\cygwin\usr\sbin\gnuplot\4.0\gnuplot_x11.exe this is how all the zombies appear, no PPID, no PGID and not viewable under ps -ef. gnuplot (the one started from any rxvt session) correctly runs and closes, but if i get it to display any graphs, it leaves a gnuplot-X11 process around that i have to kill under task manager (which seems to be the spawned process for the graph). i close the graph with "q" to quit it, or with the X close button, both lead to same result. emacs cannot decide between working (70%), working but then creating a zombie, or just throwing this error when i start: 3 [sig] emacs 20972 C:\cygwin\bin\emacs.exe: *** fatal error - called with threadlist_ix -1 the only error i've seen is the emacs one here, all the others just hang until i kill them, unfortunately this is causing my normal ".xinitrc" to sometimes not get to the window manager (because of calling xset 3 times that i then have to manually kill). i can live with this for now as i can work around it [and now see that the snapshot dll is ok], but i did want the list to know that things have definitely gone "freaky" over the last couple of cygwin releases for me. i've been able to reproduce the zombies by replacing rxvt with xterm (and still no window manager). mark -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... That's because the rxvt cygport file has this: src_prep_init_hook() { cd ${SRC_DIR} apply_patch ${origsrcdir}/${PN}-import-xpm.patch } But the official cygport has not yet integrated my patches that enable this bit of magic to work. You need a modified cygport...this is true of a lot of my packages, unfortunately. I needed facilities that were not present in cygport, so I added 'em and posted my cygport patches (7 or 8 of them, at last count) to the mailing list. However, Yaakov is quite busy at the moment (http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-talk/2006-q4/msg00159.html) so rather than delay my packages until the cygport changes were integrated, I released them anyway. Basically, I took the startxwin.bat and changed to to use mwm (which I understand to be lesstif) after XWin is started. Now, I am less concerned about this as I switched to fvwm2 which has an icon box that works better. It is also supposedly lighter than mwm although I have not done any speed tests. I did complete re-install and gvim worked (it is with standard distribution). nautilus is with cygwin ports. When I install that (even using keep), gvim and nautilus do not work. So, now, I'm trying to use KDE's konqueror instead although it dies when I try to access file system. Although, I am using it from fvwm.
