Erich -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From code@pizzashack.org Sat Dec 1 17:27:00 2007 From: code@pizzashack.org (Derek Martin) Date: Sat, 01 Dec 2007 17:27:00 -0000 Subject: xterm 6.8.99 - no unicode support Message-ID: <20071201172548.GC13231@dragontoe.org> It appears that the latest xterm (6.8.99) is built without Unicode support. Downgrading to 6.8.2, Unicode functionality works properly. My environment is all UTF-8, and everything from vim to man pages do not display correctly with the newer xterm package, but do with the older one. Oops, I just noticed Robert Uhl's thread about this very problem from November 6. So, yeah, I second all of that. It's about way, way more than copyright symbols -- I can't read unicode-encoded asian text (i.e. CJK) without it. And box-drawing characters and other semi-graphical elements do not render properly. Again, the older package works fine, and since well over 90% of my xterm usage in cygwin involves connecting to a remote Linux/Unix box to do my real work, the lack of proper locales support (while mildly irritating) is not particularly a problem. Lack of Unicode/wide character support in xterm definitely is. FWIW, it would be great if locales and a proper IME like scim were supported, so I could actually type Unicode Asian characters from cygwin. -- Derek D. If you have a two-button mouse, you can use the -emulate3buttons flag to XWin (it might even be the default), and then press the left and right buttons simultaneously. You could try adding a menu item (to the menu that appears when you right click on the X icon) to provide your own exit method. This is done using the $HOME/.XWinrc file. If you don't already have a file ~/.Xwinrc, you can get a basic one from http://www.msu.edu/~huntharo/xwin/devel/server/example.XWinrc Place it in your $HOME directory, and rename it to .XWinrc You could then change the root menu to something like this: menu root { // Comments fit here, too... "Reload .XWinrc" RELOAD "Kill XWin" exec "my_script ; kill $PPID" "Applications" menu apps SEParATOR } The Exit menu item will not be affected, but the new item "Kill XWin" will run "my_script" (assuming it is in your PATH), then kill XWin. I haven't tested how XWin responds to kill, so you may want to experiment with changing the signal, e.g. to "kill -HUP $PPID" in order to get a clean exit. If you want to know more about the .Xwinrc file, type "man XWinrc" (case is significant). I'm glad you've got it working, but just for the benefit of anyone picking up on this thread via the archives, unless you really *want* to run a Linux desktop in XWin, the advice to use XDMCP is wrong (or at least, it's not the best advice). The recommended way to run client applications is documented in the XWin user guide: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/using-remote-apps.html Using ssh is secure, reliable and easy both on the network and the remote box. In contrast, XDMCP is woefully insecure, overkill for running individual applications, and inefficient in terms of network resources and the remote host's resources - all window manager operations are transmitted over the network in addition to anything going on in the client area of the windows. If in doubt, watch the spike in network activity when you drag a window under XDMCP. Compare this with the same action using ssh tunnelling. At the same time, you can also watch the spike in CPU activity on the remote box. If you are running Gnome or KDE on the Linux box, you are running a fairly resource heavy application. There have been efforts lately to reduce their footprint, but try getting 100 users connecting to your Linux box, each using XDMCP and you'll soon notice the difference. Using XDMCP to run display managers also goes against the spirit of X, which is to have a single, local display and window-manager/desktop on which you can run clients on many different hosts. XDMCP was developed to allow using X on the graphical equivalent of dumb-terminals. Another "problem" with using XDMCP is that the remote X clients are, as far as Windows is concerned, just one application - XWin. You cannot use alt-tab to cycle through your Windows and your Linux clients at the same time. If you connect to multiple remote hosts, each using XDMCP, things can quickly become confusing. Sorry if that all sounded a bit preachy - it wasn't meant to. I only want people to make informed decisions, not make the decisions for them. I did some experiemtnation with icevm and was able to install it and have with a desktop background image. Both windows managers were run with a single "parent" window where I would launch other child windows (xterm, etc.). I later change the way I launch X windows to this: C:\cygwin\bin\bash.exe --login /usr/X11R6/bin/startxwin.sh startxwin.sh: #! /bin/sh export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0 export PATH=/usr/X11R6/bin:"$PATH" export XAPPLRESDIR=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults export XCMSDB=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Xcms.txt export XKEYSYMDB=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB export XNLSPATH=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale # Cleanup from last run. rm -rf /tmp/.X11-unix XWin -clipboard -silent-dup-error & if [ $1 = "f" ]; then fvwm2 & else icewm & fi # Return from sh. exit I did an upgrade using the cygwin setup.exe and afterwards I only get the parent window, but no pop-up menu when I mouse click inside the window. Also it doesn't pick up any of the windows fixin's (task bar, pop up menu, etc) and it has the ugly grey background. This is the case for icewm. When using fvwm2, I do get the status bar and popup menues, but nothing happens when I select an app from the popup menu. Have you recently installed or updated any of the apps on the BLODA? http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-talk/2007-q4/msg00026.html If so, it's usually not enough just to disable them, because that leaves in place the part that is actually causing the problem. Usually one has to uninstall them (and probably reboot too) before becoming free from their effects. (See below for url) I encountered the following issues: Overloading Xfont functions: Starting up XWin would fail with errors regarding locating the font. See for example the report by Yaakov earlier (2006) on this mailing list. These font errors appear to be caused by a failure in the function overloading. For example, in libXfont the RegisterFPEFunctions function is defined weak and should be overloaded with RegisterFPEFunctions defined in dixfont.c in the xserver. However, such overloading will only work for CYGWIN when libXfont is compiled static with xserver and not as a runtime dll. Changes in shadow code: Commit 9148d8700b7c5afc2644e5820c57c509378f93ce has broken the shadowRedisplay routine in miext/shadow.c and the corresponding functions in xwin such as winShadowUpdateGDI. The computation of REGION_NOTEMPTY fails. A workaround is implemented to directly call winRedrawScreenShadowDD. This should be fixed by reviewing the changes of the commit and modifying the xwin code. mieqEnqueue API changes: Due to the modular mieqEnqueue API changes, the xwin code needed changes. Also mouse (pointer) MOVE events needed to be enqueued seperately. It's not clear what caused the latter. Windows clipboard integration: Is currently broken. The changes I made are all in the patch. Let me know when you have suggestions, and whether you're able to build it. Perhaps Yaakov is willing to check it with his findings. I am confused with the discussion in the this post: http://sourceware.org/ml/cygwin-xfree/2002-10/msg00071.html. Those guys specifically tell to have DISPLAY defined before an ssh login. When I did the ssh login and tried gnuplot on the remote machine I received an error: unable to open display ''. Can you please clarify: I have a remote machine and a local machine. Which of them, if any should have DISPLAY set or not set before I attempt to login and open an X-window? Naively, I am assuming that each machine should have a DISPLAY set, for the simple reason that when I am physically at that machine, I need display in order to open x-windows. Another data point: I have a linux box. If I login from cygwin via ssh to the linux box (having DISPLAY already set on the cygwin side), I can run applications on the linux box that do open new x-windows on my cygwin machine. You need to set DISPLAY on the computer you're X11 Server is runninng before you use ssh to login to your Windows Computer. That is to let ssh know which connection to forward. 'Inside' the ssh connection the forwarding mechanism will set DISPLAY. If you change it, it will be wrong. > Naively, I am assuming that each machine should have a DISPLAY set, > for the simple reason that when I am physically at that machine, I > need display in order to open x-windows. That will not work. If you change the role of the computers you can not fix DISPLAY in .bash_profile. That is not a good idea anyway, because you could have more than one X Server running. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From xerces8@butn.net Fri Dec 14 20:18:00 2007 From: xerces8@butn.net (xerces8) Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2007 20:18:00 -0000 Subject: Fwd: ForwardX11 not working In-Reply-To: References: <4761BF74.2030201@cygwin.com> Message-ID: Maybe it will help, if you know what the DISPLAY variable is used for. It is like this: when you start a program (like gnuplot), it will okk at the DISPLAY variable and use its value as the address of the X11 display to use. So in your case, it will read "localhost:0.0" and it will connect and display on ... the localhost (localhost means "the same PC"). Never set DISPLAY manually. This is more appropriately directed to the Cygwin X list. I've reset the "Reply-To" there. Please send any follow-up the the Cygwin X list. From the above, it's clear the application you're trying to use wants to access the underlying hardware (via OpenGL). This is not supported in the current Cygwin X server.
