xmessage color

I am a newbie using cygwin/x.  I have tried to find an answer in all
documentation I can find but to no avail

I am trying to send a message through xmessage that includes color
escape sequences.  I can display color in a normal xterm window but in
xmessage I only display the escape sequences.  I have tried to find
out how to use xmessage-color but have been unable to use it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
