As does vim. And really, even if most tools can't handle locales properly, is there really any excuse for not displaying the characters properly? In any event, you can still roll your xterm package back to 202-1 to get back support for displaying unicode. I, for one, can't work without it, since a non-unicode xterm is nice enough to display the copyright symbol (??) as several characters, and vim knows that it's one, thus causing all kinds of crazy problems when 'move one character right' means 'stop the cursor on the character after the copyright symbol' to vim, but means 'stop the cursor in the middle of the copyright symbol' to xterm. Even without proper locale support, a multibyte xterm is still really, really, really useful, especially for those of us whose bosses make us put copyright symbols in our source files. ~Matt -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jwindberg@gmail.com Wed Nov 7 18:13:00 2007 From: jwindberg@gmail.com (John Windberg) Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2007 18:13:00 -0000 Subject: stopping the cygwin X Server Message-ID: <435a799b0711071013q4f59e34u7df7062471c317a3@mail.gmail.com> There's a nifty startxwin.bat file for starting the x server, but I was wondering how to stop it. I am registered blind but have a little sight left. I am working at the Royal National College for the Blind developing assistive technologies. I would like to get quite a complicated setup running. have cygwin running on a USB stick. This can be used on any Windows PC to login to my linux servers running ssh. I am running fullgraphical Gnome sessions on these boxes. I have the remote server exporting its display to the remote x server on my windows machine. This is greate. I have managed to get this working with a variety of windows based assistive tech but as yet I can not get the Orca magnifier in Gnome to respond correctly from a remote session. I have managed to get the magnified target and source setup on cygwin but the only way to use full screen magnification on Gnome is to provide the mag app with a source and target. If you have only one screen you can specify a dummy\virtual screen that you can take the output from and magnify onto your monitor. This works as the mouse and keyboard inputs go to that dummy screen but in cygwin I can run two screens using the xwin options but I can not get the keyboard input to register in the second window that does not have focus on it. Can anyone come up with an idea of how to pass the mouse and keyboard inputs to a xwin window that does not have focus? I have been mulling a few ideas about to how to go about this but at the moment I am a little stuck not fullyunderstanding what options I have open to me. In linux just modifying the \xfree.conf with a virtual screen and monitor does the trick but I can not see that working on cygwin. It does not do full screen magnification is the main reason but there are many others suck as tracking, I guess you do not need to use a mag on the pc and therefore do not understand maybe. Another factor is the lack of magnification in the windows version. I work on R&D at the Royal National College for the Blind so I have tried and tested many options that well just do not work. The windows mag is one. Finally I am pushing for a move to Linux and using a system that relies on MS is not the best solution as we are teaching students. That is, I started with: $ setxkbmap.exe de -model pc105 Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property [...] and then I tried what the FAQ said, but I got the following error: $ xkbcomp -w 3 -xkm -m de /etc/X11/xkb/keymap/xfree86 localhost:0.0 Error: Can't find file "xfree86" for keycodes include Exiting Abandoning keycodes file "it I googled for it, and after a while, I found the solution: > I had the same problem... > By copying the /etc/X11/xkb directory > into /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb > It seems to work pretty well now... (just in case, I renamed the existing file C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\lib\X11\xkb.lnk beforehand to xkb.bak.lnk before copying over) I don't know enough about Cygwin to realise how and why that is; all I know is, when I copy that directory, my German keyboard works fine in my X apps. I have tried reinstalling and uninstalling but the same problems persist. I am probably missing something but I see no reason it won't start and have been unable to find a solution on the web. We are completely unable to start XServer, it errors out. I got an error message saying to contact here. Thanks for your help. If you're going to reinstall, why not bring yourself up-to-date. Your cygwin package is years out-of-date. We've got several machine that have cygwin with X installed, when we ssh from them to an HP-UX box and attempt to run an application matlab (which opens up a new window), everything appears to work fine, except you have to use Ctrl-J instead of the key. When we're not in matlab, and just at a standard shell prompt, the enter key works like expected. Anyone have any ideas? The domain users must have at least write access to tmp and their home directory, and read access to most of the rest. At least HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin You could use sysinternals process monitor to track file and registry access and see if something fails. If you can run cygwin.bat from a command prompt (or just click on it) and you get a command prompt running bash, I think you can eliminate any possibility of incidental registry keys that Cygwin uses (or may not use, going forward). -- Larry Hall http://www.rfk.com RFK Partners, Inc. But there is another problem, which has nothing to do with cygwin. Somehow, my userID has something weird. Other co-workers are connecting fine, but my user ID is not working from any machine. They can login from my cygwin setup with their logonID without any problem, but my userID just does not work. From my setup and their setup. This is a Gentoo x86 server running gdm. In case anyone has heard anything about it. Thanks for the help. > >> >>>> jose isaias cabrera schrieb: >>>>> >>>>>> jose isaias cabrera schrieb: >>>>>>>>> I am trying to connect to a Gentoo X Server and it is connecting, >>>>>>>>> but I >>>>>>>>> don't seem to be able to open an xterm.
