Xdmcp too slow with SOME Linux accounts.

That is not true, if you tunnel through ssh you can easily start kde, gnome or whatever window manager you like if you tell xwin not to start its own local window manager.
(kde is startkde, gnome is gnome-session, icewm is icewm-session)
