Just to be sure,
- Do you have an X server running before calling ssh? There should be an 
X icon in the system tray. How did you start the server (startx, 
startxwin.bat/.sh or XWin)?
- Are you calling ssh from an xterm? What does echo $DISPLAY return 
before calling ssh? And after?
