Basically when I do ssh -vv -Y me@linuxserver I get debug2: x11_get_proto: /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth list :0.0 2>/dev/null (and the xterm hangs). Here is what I tried having read all the postings I could find. Still no luck. 1. I've reinstalled Cygwin thrice completely from scratch including removing all files, changing permissions etc. 2. My Firewall and User Account Control are disabled. My Norton is UN-installed. I renamed setup.exe to some other name. I am using Compatibility with WinXpSP2 and run the setup As Administrator. 3. I followed suggestions to rebaseall. 4. During install I pushed manually the postinstall script postinstall/post-texmf.sh (killed and executed from bash; probably no connection though but I will mention that I fixed 'w' permissions to some folders etc.). Now: My /usr/X11/bin/startx works fine, I can fork xterms as usual. I can ssh to me@linuxserver just fine, but I just can NOT do XWindows forwarding as in using ssh -vv -Y ****. My three other installations of cygwin-X that I have on Win2K and WinXP have worked nicely for the last few years and still do including ssh -Y me@linuxserver. So this is likely not a problem on my linuxserver side ... ? Any help will be greatly appreciated ... my apology if I did not find just the *right* posting .... In any case: As you can see, there is no mysql in the Cygwin distribution. If you google around, you can find a mysql package for Cygwin's setup.exe at at least. I'm screwed up, please help. Sorry this seems to go across the domains of the lists. Been using cygwin for ages for several essential things in life. In trying to install a python/gtk prog I screwed up and managed to reinstall all the packages up to date then found a few things don't work. in particular, after this update .. 1. Cygwin-X .. doesn't get the right keyboard layout. Dunno how to fix this 2. My shell scripts don't work .. I tracked this down to something that seems to have changed in the file formats, if I put the same text in a new file its ok. Doing OD on the files reveals some bytes are different near the end of the files depending on whether I created them after the update or before (created with vi). 3. Problems with Ghostscript telling me generated pdf is invalid and sometimes not succeeding in processing (I use it to merge pdf pages) - could be the same problem as the ile format one. I have available a backup of the cygwin directory prior to screwing it up (on a linux system) but no immediately-prior backup of the registry (note that I'm not very knowledgable about windows). Considerations: 4. It seems to me if I could restore the cygwin dir (I can) AND undo the registry changes things would be fine BUT I would have to know what had changed in the registry and I can't edit the backup copy (its on a linux) unless there is some way to edit that database without it being in use. I can't just restore it as there are many changes unrelated to cygwin in there. I guess one way might be to copy the current one, restore the old one, edit it and note down the cygwin stuff then put the first one back and then make changes to it but thats a somewhat dangerous process. Anyone know a way to view a registry database without it being up (either in winows or linux)? Doing strings on the files doesn't tell me a lot. 5. Perhaps better would be to work with the updated cygwin, find a way to convert the shell files I have, find out how to get the keyboard layout properly deteected - and get gs working again. 6. If I restore the old cywin directory some things work and some don't. vi wont exectute for example. I presume this is because the registry entries are wrong (they are updated fot the later stuff). Is there an easy way to correct the registry entries. This is what I'd really like, the quick fix for the registry - what entries do I change and how in order to revert to the version I have on backup. In terms of system info, uname -a gives this in the two cases (but I don't know how much it uses the registry and so this may be wrong information). I had wanted to ever since modular X117.0, and the client code works beautifully, but as I've mentioned several times, I got stuck on the server not finding the fonts. Therefore, I was resigned to using Xming, which while missing the MIT-SHM extension, is a fairly good substitute. ~ But a BYOS (S=server) situation didn't seem appropriate for the distro, so modular X117.0 stayed in Ports, where I've been keeping it relatively up to date. A recent hint to the cygwin-xfree list about using a static-only libXfont allowed XWin to launch, but now: 1) the resulting build (1.3) had no X extensions available (not sure why); 2) the current version (1.4) doesn't compile due to API changes elsewhere in the common code. Now I have much less time than I used to for Cygwin development, so I have yet to figure out either of these issues. If the 1.3 server can be made to work, maintaining the client code is no big deal; I've already done most of the work, and being modular, several people should be able to maintain X11 together. In case someone else with the Ports' X11R7 is actually interested in helping to figure this out: 1) rm -f /usr/lib/libXfont.*; 2) build and install a static libXfont (.cygport attached); 3) build xorg-server-1.3.0.0 (.cygport and patch attached). The build will stop during Xprint, but XWin will have already been built. Try launching the resulting XWin, run xdpyinfo, and no extensions are available. I really need another set of eyes to figure out what I'm missing. If anyone can figure out what's wrong with XWin, I'll be happy to look into it further. There are two problems with xmgace 1- For some unknown reason the .exe file is not in X11R6/bin/ as for all other X programs, but in /usr/share/grace/bin. In the first directory there only links pointing to the actual file. The problem is that non-cygwin programs do not understand such links. 2- xmgrace is known to require to run the cygwin command "rebaseall". I know nothing about Cygwin packaging, but I have experience building X.org on Windows. My project (VirtualGL) needs Cygwin/X because of its support of the MIT-SHM extension, and we have access to plenty of build machines. Is there a spec for which files go in which packages, etc.? You can find a bunch of info about packaging here: The one thing that's somewhat dated is the use of gbs as the packaging method. I haven't looked but I expect the current X packages use that. While it's still possible to use, 'cygport' is preferred. But it's still the choice of the maintainer. It is best to stick with one of the existing options though since there's some familiarity with them in the community. > I assume that part of the duties are to also feed back patches into the > master X.org repository to fix the Cygwin build, etc. Yes, definitely. -- Larry Hall http://www.rfk.com RFK Partners, Inc. As to what goes into the packages, what is there now is a good starting point but anything else is up to you. The best place to ask about packaging issues is cygwin-apps. If you send a query there you should find that a lot of people will have advice. cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From cygwin@cwilson.fastmail.fm Fri Mar 28 01:59:00 2008 From: cygwin@cwilson.fastmail.fm (Charles Wilson) Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2008 01:59:00 -0000 Subject: New Maintainer In-Reply-To: <003101c8903c$58792130$c3239681@BULLWINKLE> References: <003101c8903c$58792130$c3239681@BULLWINKLE> Message-ID: <47EC50B9.4070603@cwilson.fastmail.fm> DRC wrote: > Is there a spec for which files go in which packages, etc.? Given the "new" modular structure of the X.org releases, it seems to me that each "module" should be treated independently. However, that being said, each "module" may represent multiple tarballs. E.g. Take, for instance, the libXext module. Obviously, you'd have libXext-1.0.3-1-src.tar.bz2 ^ ^ | +---------- cygwin release number of this version upstream version This should contain, at minimum, the source code you compiled. Ideally, it would contain the "pristine" source (a internal libXext-1.0.3.tar.bz2 tarball), plus any patches necessary for building on cygwin, and a build script so that any schmoe could automatically rebuild it and recreate your exact binaries. There are a number of (custom cygwin) tools that can help: The "generic build script" referenced in an earlier message The "cygport" tool Jan Nieuwenhuizen's 'GUB' tool (google...) The 'netrel' tool (check cygwin-apps CVS repository) In this case, I recommend cygport -- for a very good reason below. Next, the tarballs related to libXext would also include: libXext-1.0.3-1.tar.bz2 This is the "main" binary tarball. It should contain utility programs, *basic* documentation (/usr/share/doc/libXext-1.0.3/, man1 manpages, info pages), a Cygwin-specific documentation file (/usr/share/doc/Cygwin/libXext.README), etc. libXext-devel-1.0.3-1.tar.bz2 This contains any static libraries, import libraries, header files, developer and API documentation (such as man3/ manpages), etc. libXext6-1.0.3-1.tar.bz2 This contains only and exactly the DLL for libXext: cygXext-6.dll. Note that the DLL number "6" is appended to the package name itself. This helps manage DLL version compatibility issues. Sometimes, you might choose to put documentation into a separate package (such as libXext-doc-1.0.3-1.tar.bz2). Really, it's up to you at that point. We do have to insist on a rational scheme for packages that provide DLLs, because otherwise dependency management becomes a nightmare. See: http://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-apps/2005-07/msg00228.html So, modular X has a couple dozen separate modules, each of which might result in three or four binary "packages" plus the -src package. Whoo. Guess what (and I'll let Yaakov correct me if I'm overstating this): with the exception of the Xserver itself, ALL of the other relevant X.org modules have already been ported to Cygwin, packaged in a manner compatible with Cygwin's setup.exe, and following the rules laid out above. Thank you, Yaakov Selkowitz and the cygwin ports project! ftp://sunsite.dk/projects/cygwinports/release/X11/ The -src packages each include a .cygport file that can be used to drive the build, using the cygport tool. I'm sure that Yaakov would be overjoyed if an official maintainer stepped up, and used his cygports to get these X.org packages into the official distro. The only thing that has been holding him up, from what I understand, is that he hasn't had time to get the X.org Xserver itself working, and didn't want the other modules to go "gold" without the server. > I assume that part of the duties are to also feed back patches into the > master X.org repository to fix the Cygwin build, etc. Ideally, yes. -- Chuck -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From cgf-use-the-mailinglist-please@cygwin.com Fri Mar 28 14:18:00 2008 From: cgf-use-the-mailinglist-please@cygwin.com (Christopher Faylor) Date: Fri, 28 Mar 2008 14:18:00 -0000 Subject: New Maintainer In-Reply-To: <47EC50B9.4070603@cwilson.fastmail.fm> References: <003101c8903c$58792130$c3239681@BULLWINKLE> <47EC50B9.4070603@cwilson.fastmail.fm> Message-ID: <20080328141805.GA22873@ednor.casa.cgf.cx> On Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 08:58:17PM -0500, Charles Wilson wrote: > DRC wrote: > > Is there a spec for which files go in which packages, etc.? Chris, this is NOT a new scheme, and the linux distros' methods cannot be directly mapped to cygwin with regards to shared libraries, because .so's != dlls, and ld.so != Windows Runtime Loader. There will always be some differences between our packaging and the *nixes. But in this particular case, what is "new" about the breakdown iisted below? Doesn't it map almost exactly to how Fedora distributes libXext in rpms? libXext-1.0.3-1-src.tar.bz2 libXext-1.0.3-1.tar.bz2 libXext-devel-1.0.3-1.tar.bz2 libXext6-1.0.3-1.tar.bz2 (These filenames were taken directly from Yaakov's libXext cygport.) The only real difference is that the *nixes would provide only the DLL (so) package 'libxext6' and the -devel package 'libxext-devel'; there's nothing specific in this case that really needs to go in a "base" package 'libxext'. However, in Cygwin's case I've noticed that setup.exe (at least in the past) got annoyed if you have: foo-*-src.tar.bz2 libfoo6-*.tar.bz2 (external-source: foo) libfoo-devel-*.tar.bz2 (external-source: foo) but do not have foo-*.tar.bz2 Maybe this is a bug in setup and we should fix it, or maybe it is not a problem anymore. In any case, we need to put the cygwin README, and the "normal" README/THANKS/AUTHORS/ChangeLog goobledygook somewhere. Might as well be in the (otherwise empty) foo-*.tar.bz2 package. As it happens, Yaakov chose to put the man3 docs in the "main" foo-* package, instead of the libfoo-devel-* package. I'd probably do it more like the *nixes, in this case. But really, is THIS significant? We can and should, of course, use the Linux distro's packaging choices as informed guidance, and I'm sure that's exactly what Yaakov did when he created his cygports. (The *nixes whose X components are based on the modular X.org source DO treat each module as independent subsets [that is, separate *.src.rpm's, separate lib*N rpms, separate lib*-devel rpms etc]...although they naturally tend to update/release them in simultaineous waves). Frankly, I'd want to make things as easy as possible for the new X maintainer -- and since an experienced, knowledgeable person has already done a HUGE portion of the necessary work, I'd /start/ with Yaakov's cygports...and *maybe* make some slight modifications if SuSe/Fedora/Debian did something the new X maintainer particularly likes. (Not the other way around, as you seem to suggest). My email was an attempt to explain the general way that "dll-providing" cygwin packagesets are and should be subdivided, with a short description of the 'why' behind it all. It's the way I've been providing DLL packagesets since 2002 or before. I'm surprised you consider it "new". -- Chuck -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/
