Xemacs works just fine, but Emacs doesn't. When I try to launch Emacs in GUI mode from an xterm, the shell just hangs. When I try to launch it in console mode from a non-X bash shell, the shell just hangs. Again, Xemacs works; it's only Emacs that doesn't work. Running emacs-nox doesn't help. I've also tried using the -d and -nw options, but no joy. I'm running Cygwin on Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, as follows: $ uname -a CYGWIN_NT-6.0 balance 1.5.25(0.156/4/2) 2008-04-17 12:11 i686 Cygwin The version of Emacs I'm using is one that came with the Cygwin distribution, and is version 21.2.1. I've had no problem using the same Cygwin and Emacs distros on XP Pro. The problem seems to be only on Vista. Stupid Vista... I've googled it to no avail. Any clues? One of the things we're looking for is someone who doesn't need to be hand-held. Previous maintainers have been take charge type of people who could learn the process and come up to speed on their own. Why is this? It's because no one has time/knowledge to provide exhaustive details about how to build X or create Cygwin packages. So if you are sincere in wanting to help, look in the email archives. Check out the available documentation at the web site and start making suggestions or producing packages. cgf -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From gnitsets@gmail.com Wed Sep 10 20:57:00 2008 From: gnitsets@gmail.com (Sandra Sandra) Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2008 20:57:00 -0000 Subject: Empty screen when opening X Terminal Message-ID: Hi, I am relatively new to Cygwin, I've tried to search through the archive but couldn't quite find exactly what i'm looking for. No file mfw.base! Message-ID: <000001c91445$8962eaf0$0201a8c0@Harrydraagbaar> I recently installed Cygwin. I can use metafont (command ), even under Xwindows. But after starting metafont, when I give the command <\relax> (for purely interactive use of metafont), followed by a draw- and a showit-statement my system teaches me that "Window support for X was not compiled into this binary" and tells me to use the command . So, starting metafont with ,the command <\relax> causes my system to complain: "no info for format 'mfw'. I can't find the base file 'mfw.base'!". And indeed mfw.base is not on my disk, although mf.base is. So it seems that there simply is a file 'mfw.base' missing. That's from 2005. What's on SourceForge lacks most of the fixes originally made in XFree86. There was a thread on xorg a few years ago, dealing with rman 3.2, which if I recall properly didn't go anywhere toward addressing the issues in rman. (I'd made some additional fixes in rman, which its inactive developer didn't follow up on). > 2) I don't see that rman needs an X-server, so it is puzzling why it > is found where it is. Cygwin is not DOS. That's really the crux of your problem. You've already been given one alternative way of doing what you want with "start" in a Cygwin/POSIX/Linux way. For the "cd", "cd /cygdrive/u/temp" will do what you want. If you plan to use Cygwin tools and shells, you should try to work with the environment rather than against it. A read through the Cygwin User's Guide should help some. Linux/Unix guides and tutorials should help too. -- Larry Hall http://www.rfk.com RFK Partners, Inc. I'd also quite like to see this working, so I took a look at this Attached is an updated patch & cygport * Your problem with no extensions built into the server was because mi/miinintext.c is pulled into hw/xwin to be built, so only has HAVE_XWIN_CONFIG_H defined, hence it was not aware that any extensions are enabled. Fix this and the other 2 files which are built in a similar way. Now they are actually pulled in we also need to fix the link line so the libs for the extensions are linked with * Update for the change to damage-based shadow, registering the screen bitmap as the shadow framebuffer, so that changes actually get drawn on the display. * Update automake files to compile and link the windows resource file * Define XFree86Server during the build (This is necessary to get the right visuals, otherwise they crash GLX) * Fix the lies in the ./configure --help text about branding configuration options, and use the proper option names in the .cygport file * Align the extensions enabled with those in the 6.8.99 cygwin package (minus LBX as it's been removed, plus XINERAMA,XACE as they won't turn off!) This builds an X server which "works for me(TM)" I had a couple of problems, but when I updated cygwin DLL from 1.5.25, to the most recent snapshot (2008-09-15) to get debug symbols, they seem to stop happening :S I'm not sure what to make of that... * "_XSERVTransSocketUNIXAccept: accept() failed", occasionally seen when a new client tries to connect * -multiwindow mode seems to deadlock randomly Other problems * GLX seems a bit flaky, e.g. crashes if you run glxgears, then occlude and reveal that with a native windows window, but that doesn't seem to be a regression against 6.8.99 * You might need to patch render.h to include to build -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed... Cutting and pasting between Windows and X is a little weird, because each uses its own model. To copy something in an X window, simply highlight it. This does place it in the clipboard. To paste, click the center mouse button. Windows cut/paste has a bunch of possibilities, but to copy highlight, then select Copy from the menu, type Cntl+C or type Cntl+Insert. To paste, select paste from the menu, type Cntl+V or Shift+Insert. By the way, I tend to do this an awful lot between Cygwin and Windows, for whatever reason, it seems a little cranky in the address bar of a browser, but everything else seems to work just fine. Hope this helps 72/73 de WB8RCR http://www.qsl.net/wb8rcr didileydadidah QRP-L #1446 Code Warriors #35 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brandon Metcalf" To: Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2008 9:47 AM Subject: clipboard issue > I'm trying to get copy and paste working between X applications and > Windows. Furthermore I don't believe that the indirect OpenGL rendering it does support is accelerated (It uses Mesa 6.4 software rendering). Cygwin programs can use any API/Calls that a native windows program can. Therefor if you need hardware accelerated graphics you can just use the Windows Direct3D or OpenGL API and circumvent X11 altogether. Disabling this and using the dumb scheduler works fine. If you like living dangerously, you can point your setup.exe at http://www.dronecode.org.uk/cygwin, where I've uploaded a package containing the server. The package has no install dependencies specified at the moment: from Cygports you'll need libX11_6, libXau6, libXdmcp7, libfontenc1, libfreetype26 runtimes, and xorg-fonts-misc-misc and xorg-font-cursor-misc fonts to start the server. You'll probably want some clients as well. Note that some X things in cygports have a dependency on the 6.8.99 server, but this should not be a problem since that is installed as /usr/X11R6/bin/XWin.exe, not /usr/bin/XWin.exe I'd really like some feedback if this works for anyone else :-) Known problems are: Clipboard integration is broken Window names are always shown as "Cygwin/X" -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed...
