Message-ID: <49B17136.7080707@gmail.com> This e-mail is for documentation purposes, no further help is needed. With the default Cygwin/X install, the XWin.exe -clipboard option does not seem to work when connecting using the XDMCP protocol to a Linux server running GDM. The unix and Windows clipboards would not synchronized and copy/paste did not work across sessions. In /var/log/XWin.0.log, these messages were displayed: ------------------------- winInitClipboard () winProcQueryTree - winInitClipboard returned. winClipboardProc - Hello DetectUnicodeSupport - Windows NT/2000/XP winClipboardProc - DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0 AUDIT: Fri Mar 6 13:23:07 2009: 4144 XWin: client 4 rejected from IP 127.0.0.1 winProcEstablishConnection - ProcEstablishConnection failed, bailing. winClipboardProc - Could not open display, try: 1, sleeping: 4 AUDIT: Fri Mar 6 13:23:11 2009: 4144 XWin: client 4 rejected from IP 127.0.0.1 winClipboardProc - Could not open display, try: 2, sleeping: 4 AUDIT: Fri Mar 6 13:23:15 2009: 4144 XWin: client 4 rejected from IP 127.0.0.1 winClipboardProc - Could not open display, try: 3, sleeping: 4 ------------------------- My launch batch file for XWin.exe is fairly simple: @echo off start "Title" C:\cygwin\bin\XWin.exe -clipboard -query 192.168.0.1 I tried a number of solutions offered by others, but this one solved the problem. Create a text file in your Cygwin installation folder called: /etc/X0.hosts (that's X-zero dot hosts) It should contain one line: localhost Effectively, this permissions file allows the X server to access your Windows machine's local IP address (127.0.0.1). This file should probably be part of the standard Cygwin/X install. It also doesn't seem to be mentioned in the Cygwin/X documentation (maybe its there and I just missed it). Now the log file reports: ------------------------- winClipboardProc - Hello DetectUnicodeSupport - Windows NT/2000/XP winClipboardProc - DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0 winProcEstablishConnection - Clipboard client already launched, returning. winClipboardProc - XOpenDisplay () returned and successfully opened the display. ------------------------- and the clipboard now works properly. Copy and Paste between windows and X works as expected. For GDM users, you may also need to set an entry in your gdm config file located at: /etc/gdm/gdm.conf In the [daemon] section: [daemon] KillInitClients=false I haven't confirm the GDM requirement but this is how it's set up in my configuration. Hope this helps someone. I set up my shortcut as I used to run it on WinXP. When I click it, rxvt seems to launch, window size looks like the configured one in the shortcut, but the windows closes itself again prolly after a few milliseconds. You can just see the window popping up and then it's gone again. No Errors, nothing. I can launch rxvt though from within the official cygwin shell, typing rxvt there gives me a default rxvt window just fine. Anyone of you guys running rxvt on Windows 7 beta yet? Thanks, I think my confusion actually stemmed from starting with PuTTY code, which sends VT220-style keys when set to Xterm mode. I note that Debian uses PC-style too. Is this issue fairly settled then, i.e. do most systems use the PC-style keycodes for their "xterm" terminfo entries? PC-style's the default since a long time ago when the keyboard tables were constructed for the PC keyboards. I implemented the VT220-style editing-keypad as something that could change from that default, but (aside from one of the terminfo's several years ago using VT220), xterm's used the PC-style since I've been working on it in 1996. -- Thomas E. Seems you're changing the properties for the link to cygwin.bat for some reason... what are you trying to accomplish? > For the "Target" set it to C:\cygwin\cygwin.bat and for the "Start > In:" set it to C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\startxwin.bat (see picture). Yep. Which means you want the application (cygwin.bat) to start in the directory c:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\startxwin.bat > The thing is, I set these, and the picture shows I have located the > startxwin.bat file on the right hand side, but I receive the following > error message: > > "The folder C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\startxwin.bat" specified in the > Start In box is not valid. It is hard to tell if you have application source code, written in C, that you want to compile with gcc, or if you want to compile the gcc compiler itself. Both of those topics are off-topic for this list. If instead you have an application that makes use of X Window, that would be on-topic here. > Current situation: > I have installed Cygwin in my system and trying to compile simple programs. OK. Problems using gcc on Cygwin would be discussed on the main Cygwin mailing list, not this cygwin-xfree list. > Help needed: > 1)Is it possible to build the source of GCC in cygwin targeting > Windows. If Yes, any document to do so. Here you're talking about "source of GCC" again and it's not clear whether you mean "application source to be compiled with gcc" or "source code of gcc itself to be compiled". It could also be that you don't need Cygwin, but just a Windows-based gcc compiler; in that case check out the totally separate project MinGW at mingw.org. They have their own support lists if you need their help. > 2)While compiling simple C files, I get an error stdio.h:No such file > or directory - Could you please provide some solution as the FAQ > didn't help me much Which FAQ were you reading? Start simple: Create the canonical "Hello World" example program hello.c and compile it with "gcc -o hello hello.c". Run the program with "./hello". If that doesn't work, supply a log of what happened in your next email, but send that email to the main Cygwin list, not this cygwin-xfree list. So I discovered that, assumedly with that recent major revision, a keyboard handling deficiency has been introduced: The keys of the right keypad (aka "numeric keypad") do no longer emit the keysyms KP_Home, KP_Up etc as they used to do but just plainly Home, Up etc which are also the keysyms of the small keypad (aka "editing keypad"). This makes them indistinguishable for any application - even worse, this cannot be fixed by configuration since they even send the same keycodes! These are different keys - considering them as aliases is a waste of physical resources - and they must be distinguishable for an application. That means, they must have different keycodes and they should also have different keysyms by default - that's what the KP_ keysyms are designed for. Thank you. Samuel, some say this is off topic, but I find that xterm, emacs built for x11, and et al depend on X11. I am not an expert, so can only tell you of a kludge I found that fixes the problem. There must be an X or x something rc file that can be modified to give arguments, but there is a maze of them and the formats vary. I found no direct answer on the Cygwin/X faq, but I'll cc this to the list, though I'm not a member. Here is a simple work around I found that fixed the problem for me. I changed line #28 in /bin/startx to include two arguments, one for the clipboard and one for multiple windows (which is what you want). You probably also want the clipboard to work. line 28 in "/bin/startx" changed to the below: defaultserverargs="-clipboard -multiwindow" Regards, Wynfield -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From sunjian.nku@gmail.com Mon Mar 30 07:38:00 2009 From: sunjian.nku@gmail.com (SUN, Jian) Date: Mon, 30 Mar 2009 07:38:00 -0000 Subject: Is there any way to make the key combination "Ctrl+Space" work under cygwin-XServer? Alt-space is used by emacs at least, so any X server that intercepts that keystroke is breaking emacs. For the record, ctrl-space is also used by emacs. Both keys work as expected (i.e. emacs sees them). I rejected Exceed's server because they seemed to be more concerned with making it Windows-user friendly than a good (i.e. standard) X server. You shouldn't have to change the way you work with X apps depending on which OS you're connecting from. X is by no means the only application that doesn't support alt-space as a shortcut for the window menu. Any terminal emulator will also pass that key combination to the client application as well (if it didn't, it would be broken). It's a few years since I tried Exceed's server, but IIRC that was one of the problems I had. I had to tailor my .emacs to remap keys, but because I only used Exceed at work, I got sick of trying to remember which server I was using, and therefore which keystroke I could use, and ditched Exceed as soon as XWin became stable enough. > So the standard XFree server's behavior is to pass the key sequence to > the x applications and let them to decide what to do. I like this feature very > much and it's also the default behavior of Gnome. The problem is that (in multiwindow mode), the window menu is a _Windows_ menu; it's not an X window menu. I don't believe there is a way to activate that from within an X application. However, you can use translations in your ~/.Xdefaults to map keystrokes to minimize/ maximize/restore. man xterm, and search for "translations" and "ACTIONS". I'd advise against using alt-space (it's also used by readline, and therefore by bash, as well as emacs). I would suggest using the context menu key (usually next to Alt Gr), which, as a fairly recent addition to keyboards is unlikely to be used by console apps. E.g. something like this should work: XTerm*VT100.Translations: #override \n\ Menu:maximize() \n\ CtrlMenu:restore() \n\ ShiftMenu:iconify() \n\ MetaMenu:deiconify() I've not tested this, and it's several years since I needed to define any translations, so if you don't understand how translations work, you should read the documentation before trying this. The same technique should work with any Xt based X application. > Thanks a lot, > SUN, Jian (Jason) > On Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 5:41 PM, Phil Betts Please don't quote raw email addresses in your replies. This question has bothered me for a looong time. Your code works fine on my computer. Following your instruction and some articles on the web, I adapted it to a "windows flavor" by adding the following codes in my ~/.XDefaults XTerm*metaSensEscape: true XTerm*VT100.Translations: "$ n": iconify() \n\ "$ m": maximize() \n\ "$ r": restore() \n\ However it caused problems and some keys could not work any more. (e.g. x n) I think I may turn to xtermcontrol and use commands to resize the windows instead of key combinations. xtermcontrol --maximize xtermcontrol --restore Thanks a lot for your help. I really appreciate it. Said patch allows the REMOTE_HOST variable to be set with the first argument from the command line. I have found this to be very handy for creating a Windows desktop link (.lnk) to connect to each of my most commonly used X servers. In some LNK file: Target = C:\cygwin\bin\startxdmcp.bat SomeHost Start in = C:\cygwin\bin Being able to create multiple LNK files is much better than creating multiple copies of startxdmcp.bat with a different REMOTE_HOST set in each. This simple change has served me well over the last year or so. Please consider merging it to the Cygwin/X distribution. E.g. to bind F1 to maximize and F2 to restore: bind '"\eOP":'$'"\201"'; bind -x $'"\201":xtermcontrol --maximize' bind '"\eOQ":'$'"\202"'; bind -x $'"\202":xtermcontrol --restore' You can't bind a shell command to a key that doesn't already feature in readline's map, so you have to translate the key (\eOP) into a non-existent key (\201) that is in its map, then bind the non- existent key to the command. > Thanks a lot for your help.
