XFig problems [locale?]

Just for completeness, adding

xfig()
{
     LANG=''\
     /usr/bin/xfig -specialtext -latexfonts -startlatexFont default \
         "$@" 2>/dev/null
}

to my .bash_wrappers file, solved the problems. :-)
