I have two fresh windows 8 machines. Looks like cygwin/x doesn't work on either of them with similar symptoms. The installation went fine. "xwin" command seems to work as expected. But when I try to right click on X icon in tray -> Applications -> xterm (or emacs/xload) - nothing happens. Your cygcheck output shows that you don't have emacs installed, so you won't be able to start it from the X icon. But that's not related to your fork failure. The new XWin.exe seems to fix the problem. I just set up a link from /usr/bin/XWin.exe to the new .exe file so that I can switch between the original and new easier. I can reproduce the issue with the original and the issue is fixed with the new XWin.exe. I did notice a lot more debug info coming out to my terminal from the X server and I see that the .exe file is much larger than the original; Do you expect to make this an official mod to the base or should I pass this snapshot to my customers? Is there any way to turn off the debug info from the x server? Thanks so much for all you have done with this! Perhaps that's something I need to look at adding. If using the latest X server doesn't resolve your problem, then possibly this is a bug with the mapping of the X windows decoration hints into a native Windows window style. Can you install 'xprop' (using cygwin setup), and show the output you get from running that, then clicking on the window which doesn't get a resize frame. > As a test I ran xclock on an old Sun system via PuTTY under both Cygwin > versions. This is pretty strange. Assuming this isn't a bug ([1] looks a bit old to be relevant), I can only suggest that this may be an issue with colour correction if you have that enabled for KDE. It would help in trying to reproduce this problem to know the specific version of Ubuntu that your remote X clients are from. I can't reproduce this. I think there must be some other factor at work: the XWin error message relates to a timeout during X -> Windows clipboard conversion, but I can't make clicking on a firefox bookmark cause that conversion to happen. After deeper investigation, it occurs that the problem is triggered by gnuplot in particular (I was effectively unable to reproduce it with a few other X11 applications, as xterm, xfig, xdvi or ddd). Most of the time I use gnuplot from within Octave, but the easiest way to reproduce the problem is by launching gnuplot directly in a Cygwin terminal window, then entering "plot sin(x), cos(x)" on the gnuplot prompt to open an X11 pop-up window containing a plot. Here is the terminal output from gnuplot: $ gnuplot G N U P L O T Version 4.6 patchlevel 3 last modified 2013-04-12 Build System: CYGWIN_NT-5.1 i686 Copyright (C) 1986-1993, 1998, 2004, 2007-2013 Thomas Williams, Colin Kelley and many others gnuplot home: http://www.gnuplot.info faq, bugs, etc: type "help FAQ" immediate help: type "help" (plot window: hit 'h') Terminal type set to 'x11' gnuplot> plot sin(x), cos(x) gnuplot> After this, clicking on Firefox bookmarks shows the problem - also when using the bookmark window opened with Ctrl-Shift-B. I also tried to relaunch FF in "safe mode" i.e. with add-ons disabled, with the same result. After closing gnuplot it is necessary to wait for a few minutes until FF's behaviour returns to normal; alternatively one can close the X server to restore the normal function of FF immediately. The problem shows both under Windows XP (SP3) and under Windows 7 (SP 1). I attach the "cygcheck -s -v -r" output and the /var/log/xwin/XWin.0.log for the former platform. I don't know why most of the message lines in the XWin.0.log are duplicated without and with the [time stamp] in front (it is not the case under Windows 7) - but that's another problem. -------------- next part -------------- Cygwin Configuration Diagnostics Current System Time: Tue Jul 23 20:14:47 2013 Windows XP Home Edition Ver 5.1 Build 2600 Service Pack 3 Path: C:\cygwin\usr\local\bin C:\cygwin\bin C:\WINDOWS\system32 C:\WINDOWS C:\WINDOWS\System32\Wbem C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0 C:\Programme\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex\bin C:\Programme\Graphviz2.30\bin C:\cygwin\lib\lapack Output from C:\cygwin\bin\id.exe UID: 1005(tannhaeuser) GID: 513(Kein) =513(Kein) 0(root) 544(Administratoren) 545(Benutzer) SysDir: C:\WINDOWS\system32 WinDir: C:\WINDOWS USER = 'tannhaeuser' PWD = '/cygdrive/c/Dokumente und Einstellungen/tannhaeuser/Eigene Dateien' CYGWIN = 'nodosfilewarning' HOME = '/cygdrive/c/Dokumente und Einstellungen/tannhaeuser/Eigene Dateien' HOMEPATH = '\Dokumente und Einstellungen\tannhaeuser' MANPATH = '/usr/local/man:/usr/share/man:/usr/man:' APPDATA = 'C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\tannhaeuser\Anwendungsdaten' HOSTNAME = 'acer-ynz6mc8jgo' SHELL = '/bin/bash' TERM = 'xterm' PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER = 'x86 Family 6 Model 9 Stepping 5, GenuineIntel' WINDIR = 'C:\WINDOWS' OLDPWD = '/cygdrive/c/Dokumente und Einstellungen/tannhaeuser' USERDOMAIN = 'ACER-YNZ6MC8JGO' OS = 'Windows_NT' ALLUSERSPROFILE = 'C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\All Users' !:: = '::\' TEMP = '/tmp' COMMONPROGRAMFILES = 'C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien' USERNAME = 'tannhaeuser' GS_PROG = 'C:\Programme\gs\gs9.07\bin\gswin32' NewEnvironment1 = 'C:\Programme\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Broadband\Optimization Client\' PROCESSOR_LEVEL = '6' PSModulePath = 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\Modules\' FP_NO_HOST_CHECK = 'NO' SYSTEMDRIVE = 'C:' EDITOR = 'C:\Programme\emacs\bin\runemacs.exe' USERPROFILE = 'C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\tannhaeuser' LANG = 'de_DE.UTF-8' CLIENTNAME = 'Console' TZ = 'Europe/Berlin' PS1 = '\[\e]0;\w\a\]\n\[\e[32m\]\u@\h \[\e[33m\]\w\[\e[0m\]\n\$ ' LOGONSERVER = '\\ACER-YNZ6MC8JGO' PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE = 'x86' SHLVL = '1' PATHEXT = '.COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH;.PSC1' HOMEDRIVE = 'C:' MpPersistModule_3336_KeepUserEnvDll = '1' COMSPEC = 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe' TMP = '/tmp' SYSTEMROOT = 'C:\WINDOWS' PRINTER = 'Canon MP700 Printer' PROCESSOR_REVISION = '0905' INFOPATH = '/usr/local/info:/usr/share/info:/usr/info:' PROGRAMFILES = 'C:\Programme' DISPLAY = ':0.0' NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS = '1' SESSIONNAME = 'Console' COMPUTERNAME = 'ACER-YNZ6MC8JGO' _ = '/usr/bin/cygcheck' HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygwin HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygwin\Program Options HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygwin\setup HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs\Cygwin (default) = (unsupported type) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs\Cygwin-X (default) = (unsupported type) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs\Cygwin-X\Information (default) = (unsupported type) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cygwin HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cygwin\Installations (default) = '\??\C:\cygwin' HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cygwin\Program Options HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cygwin\setup (default) = 'C:\cygwin' obcaseinsensitive set to 1 Cygwin installations found in the registry: System: Key: c5e39b7a9d22bafb Path: C:\cygwin c: hd NTFS 38154Mb 73% CP CS UN PA FC ACER d: cd N/A N/A e: fd N/A N/A C:\cygwin / system binary, auto C:\cygwin\bin /usr/bin system binary, auto C:\cygwin\lib /usr/lib system binary, auto cygdrive prefix /cygdrive user binary, auto Found: C:\cygwin\bin\awk -> C:\cygwin\bin\gawk.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\bash.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\cat.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\cp.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\cpp.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\crontab.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\find.exe Found: C:\WINDOWS\system32\find.exe Warning: C:\cygwin\bin\find.exe hides C:\WINDOWS\system32\find.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\gcc.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\gdb.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\grep.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\kill.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\ld.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\ls.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\make.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\mv.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\patch.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\perl.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\rm.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\sed.exe Not Found: ssh Found: C:\cygwin\bin\sh.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\tar.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\test.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\vi.exe Not Found: vim 35k 2013/07/13 C:\cygwin\bin\cygamd-0.dll - Previously I had verified the problem against remote clients from Kubuntu 12.04 and FreeBSD 9.1 after installing the kde4 port. I wanted to confirm the problem one last time before sending this email, and, to my chagrin, I cannot repeat it. I've tested on several different machines and the appearance is normal. Maybe a reboot did the trick? If I see the issue again I will work on a recreation recipe, given the intermittent nature. The cause was an UAC issue. I am new to W7 (64) so I am trying to setup it as on XP (32). More precisely, I have chose the local Cygwin repository in $HOME/cygwin_repo, being $HOME the HOME of the administrator (angelo). And, after the first installation (in which I got the UAC request), I have put setup-x86[_64].exe in the local repo. Cygwin32 is installed in C:\cygwin while Cygwin64 is in C:\cygwin64. I use the same repo for both (they are separated in MIRROR/x86[_64]) So, to install/update packages, I do: Start|Run C:\cygwin\home\angelo\cygwin_repo\setup-x86.exe (Cygwin32) C:\cygwin\home\angelo\cygwin_repo\setup-x86_64.exe (Cygwin64) Now, starting setup-x86_64.exe asks me always the UAC confirmation, instead setup-x86.exe don't! It run without administrator permissions. And this causes the failure described in my OP. The workaround has been to move setup-x86.exe in the parent directory, i.e. Start|Run C:\cygwin\home\angelo\setup-x86.exe asks me the UAC confirmation, it really run as administrator. What I don't understand is why moving setup-x86.exe in that way fixes the issue. I have also removed cygwin_repo and recreated but setup-x86.exe needs to stay above cygwin_repo... This regard only setup-x86.exe and not setup-x86_64.exe.. :( > > Ciao, > Angelo. -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/ From jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk Tue Jul 30 10:56:00 2013 From: jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk (Jon TURNEY) Date: Tue, 30 Jul 2013 10:56:00 -0000 Subject: Missing X11/x-start-menu-icons selection when installing cygwin/X using setup-x86_64.exe In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <51F79BDB.7090306@dronecode.org.uk> On 28/07/2013 00:36, David Imamura wrote: > Trying to install Cygwin/x following install guide > http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ug/setup.html#setup-cygwin-x-installing. > Does not display selection for X11/X-start-menu-icons, but can continue install. Install then has an error and is not successful (missing windows start menu icons). This is a documentation error. The X-start-menu-icons package is obsolete and does not exist for x86_64. I've updated the documentation to remove this reference. I've also updated the documentation to remove the reference to setup.exe and point to the architecture specific setup programs instead. > Details: > Windows 7 pro 64-bit machine using setup-x86_64.exe downloaded 7/24/2013. > Could see and select xorg-server, xorg-docs, xinit. > Error 134? Here's an example: -l -c /usr/bin/startxwin.exe 2. Make sure all the arguments you want to pass to the target program are represented in (the|one of the) elements. Be sure that all sequences of two '-' characters are replaced by -!- (e.g. -!-login for --login, etc). 3. Create a shortcut with the following target: C:\cygwin\bin\run2.exe /cygwin/path/to/your/xml/file Enjoy. (Try C:\cygwin\bin\run2.exe --debug=3 --notty /cygwin/path/to/your/xml/file if it doesn't work). -- Chuck -- Unsubscribe info: http://cygwin.com/ml/#unsubscribe-simple Problem reports: http://cygwin.com/problems.html Documentation: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/ FAQ: http://x.cygwin.com/docs/faq/
