One flagrant difference is that cygwin/X seems to have only 16-bits 
visuals here. So there is a bug either in the way cygwin handles 16-bits 
visuals, or in the way *some* component of CDE handles 16-bits TrueColor 
visuals.

What happens if you start cygwin/X so that it has a 24-bits TrueColor 
visual?
