It doesn't hang for me, it just doesn't display any output...


I guess I was being a bit optimistic.  It seems you also need to:

- start your xterm in UTF-8 mode as 'xterm +lc -u8', as discussed [1]

- configure your bash shell not to escape 8-bit characters, using the first 3 
lines from [2]

- start your xterm with a suitable font 'xterm +lc -u8 -fn 
-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso10646-1'

At least, now I can mash on keys and random cyrillic letters come up :-)
