Chris,

Just to clarify, did you change the heap allocation from 1GB to 512MB or
256MB, as the release notes at
http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-announce/2001/msg00009.html state:

* Lower heap size from 1.1.8-1 default of 1GB to 256MB.
